Humor goes with the job

The power of humor

Each company wants to be successful, it’s obvious. Each of them has its aims to achieve over some time. Usually, the whole firms, as well as its managers and C-levels, focus so much on the goals that they forget about keeping a good atmosphere at their business. Many companies believe that office is not a really good place for humor, so they draw a line under this. And, in so doing, they causing harm to themselves. The bad atmosphere causes stress which is really close to health problems, and these lead to sick leaves. According to Polish Social Insurance Institution, in 2016 Poles spent 220 million days on their sick leaves! The numbers are pretty alarming, but at the same time, it seems to be easy to mitigate. How?
Well, thanks to humor:

  • Your organism produces endorphins which have an impact on immune system and can ease a headache, muscular pain or a toothache;
  • You can burn calories (a long laugh is equivalent to 30-minutes run);
  • It allows your muscles to rest.

Of course, that’s not all - humor is good for many other aspects, so it would be a sin not to make a usage of it. In what way? I believe that each of you already knows.

Hand in hand with work

As I mentioned above, many of companies want to separate humor and work. Meanwhile, they should go hand in hand, what is well-described by Andrew Tarvin in his TEDx presentation. The world’s first Humor Engineer (as Tarvin calls himself), who worked with over 200 businesses in his career, said that humor and work should be partners just like Pinky and the Brain that are known from American animated television series of Warner Bros. Pinky represents humor, and the Brain is work. They are sufficiently different and only thanks to cooperation they are able to live together in harmony.

Humour is necessary for work because it burst your brain. It reduces stress, and as a result, employees are more productive. It has to do with the fact that people start to do their best in work. It also has a positive effect on their finances - according to the statistics, people with a great sense of humor are promoted or get a raise more often.The report of famous American consulting firm, Robert Half International, says that 91% of decision-making people in companies think that the sense of humor is necessary to succeed. Moreover, the sense of humor is the other the most desirable trait of candidates besides the strong work ethic. And the circle ends up.

When you have a conference room that resembles a football pitch, then you have to take advantage of it! Or that's what some of us though while organising a screening of the Poland-Armenia game. But that's what friends do - not only stay in the office to together watch a match, but also stay even longer to play foosbal#match #polandarmenia #PolandvsArmenia #armeniavspoland #armeniapolska #football #footballmatch #officelife #friends #happy #wewon #afterhours #coworker #lovemyjob #softwarehouse #webdeveloper #merixstudio #poland

The key for team play and proper management

The excellent atmosphere created by humor is the key aspect that effects on everyday work. Of course, you should use humor in moderation so that it doesn’t offend anybody. Then it allows to break the tension and help to deal with conflict. Humour also supports team integration and let you put things (and other people) in perspective. It makes people being on the same side, helping each other as well as brings them closer if they are laughing together.

Of course, I’m talking not only about the happy workplace (meaning teams) but also about the good spirit in a management team. Both, leadership and a good sense of humor should be a hallmark of a good leader. It’s good when employees know that their leader is someone with whom they can talk freely and who can both manage and break the tension in a crisis. It’s easier to gain trust and therefore make cooperation even better then. This is even more important as people spend about 90 000 hours on the job during their whole lives! It should, therefore, be spent in a good atmosphere, right?

So let’s smile :)

I hope this short piece will change your mind about the humor and convince you that it should be the necessary element of work. It not only provides the positive atmosphere but also takes care of your health. And, boss, this is the reason why you shouldn’t be upset if you see your employees smiling but not working for a moment. It makes your workplace even better!

Those faces can be used as a proof that our Christmas party was a success!:) Last Friday we stayed a little longer in the office and celebrated the most wonderful time of the year.
