Defend Your Homes

Retro-style, fully responsive HTML5 game

Defend Earth against Aliens!

In early 2016, we started working on a project with Homes.com, one of the top real estate search engines in the United States.

Their goal was to capture interest around Sci-Fi Summer blockbusters, while entertaining and educating consumers on locations around the US. Homes.com worked with us collaboratively to create a cross-device game reminiscent of pixel-based games of the 70-80s. We collectively decided that an HTML5 code base would be the best option, and over several months arrived at a look and feel that both captured the retro gaming experience, as well as a functioning, fun & challenging game that engaged Homes.com’s target audiences.

Project

Homes.com wanted a game to connect with the 80’s generation, a key home buying segment. In designing the game familiarity was key, with simple controls to mirror arcade machines of that era.

This audience remembers generation-defining games like Space Invaders, Caterpillar, Pac-Man and other 8-bit video games so our designers faced the challenge of capturing the retro-style, while introducing brand messaging and key client-requested features. The results included original pixilated objects, simple controls (on both desktop & mobile devices) & an 8-bit sound track that created an awesome ‘hat tip’ to the 80’s classics.

The player who protects his homes the best, answers questions and destroys all the ships on each level scores the highest! Score is tracked in the top left corner of the screen.

The player has 3 lives (ships) in each game. This counter shows the number of lives left.

These two indicators show the number of alien enemies left and the number of special ships with a bonus bomb-questions remaining per level. Note: If you shoot all the aliens the level finishes, so it’s important strategically to shoot all the question ships for maximum score.
